Cake Making Safety

Cake making is certainly a rewarding hobby that practically anyone can take part in. However, it should always be remembered that there are many potential hazards to watch out for. In order to stay safe while cooking there are several things that everyone should bear in mind. Knowing the dangers and how to avoid them is essential.

Children Should Be Supervised At All Times

In recent years the popularity of baking has surged. This is thanks to television programmes such as The Great British Bake Off. They have helped to promote cake making amongst young people. Whilst children should be encouraged to bake it is vital that adults supervise them at all times. This will prevent them injuring themselves or accidentally starting a fire. It will also give adults an opportunity to teach their children about important safety procedures.

Keep An Eye On The Oven

By far the most dangerous device in the kitchen is the oven. Many cake recipes require stoves to be left on for extended periods of time. It can be tempted for people to leave it on and turn their attention to something else. However, an unattended oven can be dangerous. It is better to keep an eye on it so that any issues can be dealt with before they escalate.

Keep A Fire Extinguisher Or Blanket In The Kitchen

By far the worst case scenario when making a cake is for a fire to start. If left to burn it can easily spread. For this reason kitchens should always have a working extinguisher or blanket stored in an easy to locate place. People may be able to put out a small fire on their own. If it is too big and dangerous then it is better to call the local fire department.

Clean Up Spillages

Spillages can be surprisingly hazardous. For example, if someone slips on a puddle of water in the kitchen they could easily injure themselves. Spills should not be left till later. Instead they need to be cleaned up as soon as possible. Grease spillages are particularly dangerous as they can cause fires on the hob or inside the oven. For this reason it is a good idea to clean up the kitchen before starting a new cake project.
